The Start: Vision

A few years ago, as an eighteen year old kid pursing a career in professional wrestling I knew I must get bigger, add size and muscle in order to look the part and be taken seriously. I was a measly 170lbs with change in my pockets!  I thought what better way to educate myself, to learn, than from the best?  Somebody I highly admired and respected, that had accomplished so much in every realm he decided to enter: none other than, Arnold Schwarzenegger.  So I bought this giant Bible-sized exercise book that he authored and dove into it, day after day, reading parts over and over, highlighting, taking in as much information as I could.  That was really where it all started for me.

I find it amazing, to this very day I still have some of his words and messages resonating within me.  To get just as much out of a sentence or paragraph now as I did when I was eighteen I find astonishing.  In fact, the reason I’m writing this now is because I remembered a quote that kept ringing in my head, and I had to find it and look at it, from the source, read it, word for word.  As I did this I was taken back...to that summer when I was eighteen and so new to everything in the gym.  Like a baby pup getting his legs underneath him for the first time, with the whole world to discover; the gym was a whole new world with my own self-discovery lying within.  It was a great time of growing and learning.

So the passage left below I did find again, and it coincides with my entire philosophy.  In this one passage, you can really see why Arnold was and still is so dominant in everything, his mind and thinking set him apart.  I am so big on visualization, and I couldn’t say it any better.  I hope you get as much out of it as I do...

“The first step is to have a clear vision of where you want to go, what you want to achieve...When your vision is powerful enough, everything else falls into place: how you live your life, your workouts, what friends you choose to hang out with, how you eat, what you do for fun.  Vision is purpose, and when your purpose is clear so are your life choices.  Vision creates faith and faith creates willpower.  With faith there is no anxiety, no doubt - just absolute confidence.”

The following was taken from Chapter 7, “Mind over Matter: Mind, the Most Powerful Tool” written by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1998, The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding
